About
Fall 2026 New Volunteer Application: TBA
*AAGP has a limited number of placements available at this time; placement is not guaranteed. New volunteers will be matched with sites based on form submission time and scheduling availability.
Adopt-A-Grandparent connects UVA students with the local community by providing support and companionship to residents of nursing homes and care facilities around Charlottesville. Volunteers serve in a wide variety of settings, from assisted living to rehabilitation to memory care. Weekly activities differ between sites, but may look like one-on-one conversations or group activities (arts and crafts, bingo/trivia, music, exercise games, etc.).
This is an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in the healthcare field. While volunteers are not allowed to provide any sort of medical care, this program provides an opportunity to form meaningful connections, learn about personal care experiences, and observe long-term care beyond traditional medical settings.
We currently serve 13 sites (see below) and interact with hundreds of community members. The expected time commitment for volunteers is 1-2 hours per week. Carpool will be available for those without transportation. Vaccination documentation or masking may be required at some sites. Every site is different, but expect to participate in mandatory orientation/training before starting.
Please keep in mind that this program accepts new volunteers on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please feel free to reach out with any questions to the Head Program Director, Brooke Hughes (jub7rc@virginia.edu).
